मम संजात रोषस्य मुखम् दृष्ट्वा एव मैथिलि ।
विद्रवन्ति परित्रस्ताः सुराः शक्र पुरोगमाः ॥ ॥३-४८-७॥
mama saṃjāta roṣasya mukham dṛṣṭvā eva maithili । vidravanti paritrastāḥ surāḥ śakra purogamāḥ ॥ ॥3-48-7॥
Translation
O Maithili! Upon merely seeing my face when I am enraged, all the gods, led by Indra, flee in sheer terror.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे मैथिली! जब मुझे क्रोध आता है, तब मेरे उस क्रुद्ध मुख को देखकर ही इंद्र आदि समस्त देवता भयभीत होकर भाग खड़े होते हैं।
English Commentary
In this verse, Ravana attempts to establish his supremacy over the cosmic hierarchy to intimidate Sita. By stating that even the gods led by Indra (Shakra) flee merely at the sight of his angry face, he asserts that he is the ultimate power in the universe. The intention is to make Sita feel helpless; if the guardians of the world cannot stand against him, how could a mere human exile protect her? This hyperbolic boast highlights Ravana’s ego and his strategy of psychological domination, trying to convince Sita that resistance is futile against a being who terrorizes heaven itself.

रावण यहाँ अपने बल और प्रभाव का दंभ भर रहा है। वह सीता को भयभीत करने और अपने प्रति आकर्षित करने के लिए अपनी तुलना देवताओं से करता है और स्वयं को उनसे श्रेष्ठ सिद्ध करने का प्रयास करता है। 'शक्र पुरोगमाः' का अर्थ है 'इन्द्र को आगे करके', जिससे तात्पर्य है कि देवराज इन्द्र भी उसके सामने टिकने का साहस नहीं करते। रावण यह जताना चाहता है कि यदि देवता भी उससे डरते हैं, तो राम जैसा साधारण वनवासी मनुष्य उसकी तुलना में तुच्छ है। यह श्लोक रावण के अहंकार और उनकी त्रैलोक्य-विजयी छवि को प्रस्तुत करता है, जिसका उपयोग वह सीता के मनोबल को तोड़ने के लिए कर रहा है।
