निष्कंप पत्राः तरवो नद्यः च स्तिमित उदकाः ।
भवन्ति यत्र तत्र अहम् तिष्ठामि च चरामि च ॥ ॥३-४८-९॥
niṣkaṃpa patrāḥ taravo nadyaḥ ca stimita udakāḥ । bhavanti yatra tatra aham tiṣṭhāmi ca carāmi ca ॥ ॥3-48-9॥
Translation
Wherever I stay or move about, the leaves of the trees remain motionless, and the waters of the rivers become still.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं जहाँ रहता हूँ या विचरण करता हूँ, वहाँ वृक्षों के पत्ते तक नहीं हिलते और नदियों का जल प्रवाह थम कर स्थिर हो जाता है।
English Commentary
This verse creates an atmosphere of eerie stillness to emphasize Ravana's terror. The imagery of motionless leaves and stagnant rivers suggests that nature holds its breath in his presence. Unlike the peace found in a sage's ashram, this stillness is born of dread. Ravana illustrates that his mere existence commands absolute submission from the environment. By projecting this image of total control, he tries to dwarf Sita's faith in Rama and the natural order, presenting himself as a being whose will supersedes the flow of life itself.

यह श्लोक पिछले श्लोक का ही विस्तार है, जो रावण के आतंक के प्रभाव को और गहरा करता है। वृक्षों के पत्तों का न हिलना और नदियों के प्रवाह का रुक जाना एक 'स्तम्भन' की स्थिति है। यह सन्नाटा शांति का नहीं, बल्कि भीषण भय का प्रतीक है। रावण यह जताना चाहता है कि उसकी उपस्थिति मात्र से चराचर जगत की गतिविधियाँ थम जाती हैं। सीता के लिए इसका संदेश स्पष्ट है—रावण के सामने किसी भी प्रकार की हलचल या विरोध व्यर्थ है। यह उसके 'प्रताप' का नकारात्मक रूप है, जो जीवन को कुंठित करता है, पोषित नहीं।
