सीताया वचनम् श्रुत्वा दशग्रीवः प्रतापवान् ।
हस्ते हस्तम् समाहत्य चकार सुमहत् वपुः ॥ ॥३-४९-१॥
sītāyā vacanam śrutvā daśagrīvaḥ pratāpavān । haste hastam samāhatya cakāra sumahat vapuḥ ॥ ॥3-49-1॥
Translation
Hearing Sita's words, the powerful Ten-headed Ravana struck one hand against the other (clapped in anger) and assumed a colossal body.

सीता के (ऐसे कठोर) वचन सुनकर, उस प्रतापवान दशग्रीव (रावण) ने हथेली पर हथेली पटकी (ताली बजाई) और अपना शरीर बहुत विशाल बना लिया।
English Commentary
The narrative shifts from dialogue to action. Stung by Sita's rebuke, Ravana drops the pretense of the gentle mendicant. The act of striking his hands together signifies a burst of rage and a declaration of intent. By expanding his body (sumahat vapu), he physically manifests the overwhelming threat he poses. This transformation is meant to intimidate Sita psychologically and physically, marking the transition from the "tempter" archetype to the "monster" archetype.

यहाँ से रावण अपने छद्म वेश का त्याग करना शुरू करता है। 'हस्ते हस्तम् समाहत्य' क्रोध और निर्णय का सूचक है—जैसे कोई योद्धा युद्ध या दण्ड देने के लिए तैयार होता है। 'सुमहत् वपुः' (विशाल शरीर) धारण करना उसकी मायावी शक्ति का प्रदर्शन है। अभी तक वह एक ब्राह्मण भिक्षु के रूप में था, लेकिन सीता के तिरस्कार ने उसे अपना असली, भयावह रूप दिखाने पर विवश कर दिया। यह दृश्य भय उत्पन्न करने वाला है, जो दर्शाता है कि कूटनीति विफल होने पर दुष्ट शक्ति का प्रयोग करते हैं।
