स मैथिलीम् पुनः वाक्यम् बभाषे वाक्य कोविदः ।
न उन्मत्तया श्रुतौ मन्ये मम वीर्य पराक्रमौ ॥ ॥३-४९-२॥
sa maithilīm punaḥ vākyam babhāṣe vākya kovidaḥ । na unmattayā śrutau manye mama vīrya parākramau ॥ ॥3-49-2॥
Translation
That expert in speech (Ravana) spoke again to Maithili: "I think that in your madness, you have not heard of my valor and prowess."

वह वाक-चतुर (बातों का जानकार) रावण मैथिली से पुनः बोला—मुझे लगता है कि पागलपन के कारण तुमने मेरे वीर्य और पराक्रम के बारे में नहीं सुना है।
English Commentary
Ravana attempts to invalidate Sita's defiance by attributing it to insanity (unmattaya). Described as vakya kovidah (skilled in speech), he cunningly twists the situation: instead of accepting her rejection as moral fortitude, he frames it as ignorance born of madness. He suggests that knowledge of his power is universal, and only someone out of their mind would fail to recognize his supremacy. This is a manipulative tactic to undermine her confidence and portray her resistance as irrational.

रावण को 'वाक्य कोविदः' (बोलने में चतुर) कहा गया है। वह सीता के क्रोध और आत्मविश्वास को 'उन्माद' (पागलपन) का नाम देता है। यह एक मनोवैज्ञानिक चाल है जिसे आज की भाषा में 'गैसलाइटिंग' (gaslighting) कहा जा सकता है। वह सीता की बातों को गंभीरता से लेने के बजाय उन्हें मानसिक रूप से अस्थिर बताकर खारिज करता है। उसका तर्क है कि यदि कोई स्वस्थ चित्त वाला व्यक्ति उसके पराक्रम को जानता, तो वह उसका विरोध करने का साहस कभी नहीं करता।
