स ताम् असित केश अन्ताम् भास्करस्य प्रभाम् इव ।
वसन आभरण उपेताम् मैथिलीम् रावणो अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥३-४९-१०॥
sa tām asita keśa antām bhāskarasya prabhām iva । vasana ābharaṇa upetām maithilīm rāvaṇo abravīt ॥ ॥3-49-10॥
Translation
Ravana spoke to Maithili, whose hair ends were dark black, who shone like the radiance of the sun, and who was adorned with garments and jewelry.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जिनके केशों के अग्रभाग काले थे और जो सूर्य की प्रभा के समान (तेजस्वी) थीं, उन वस्त्राभूषणों से अलंकृत मैथिली से रावण ने कहा।
English Commentary
Even in this moment of terror, the poet describes Sita's radiance as resembling the 'light of the sun' (bhāskarasya prabhām iva). This simile suggests that she is scorching in her purity—brilliant but untouchable. The mention of her dark hair and ornaments highlights her beauty, which is the catalyst for Ravana's obsession. However, the solar comparison implies that just as one cannot grasp a sunbeam, Ravana cannot truly possess Sita's spirit. He addresses her, oblivious to the fact that this 'radiance' will eventually burn down his empire.
हिंदी टीका
वाल्मीकि यहाँ सीता के सौंदर्य का वर्णन रावण की आँखों से नहीं, बल्कि उनकी दिव्यता के संदर्भ में करते हैं। 'भास्करस्य प्रभाम् इव' (सूर्य की प्रभा के समान) कहकर कवि यह स्पष्ट करते हैं कि सीता का तेज अग्नि के समान पवित्र है, जिसे छूना विनाशकारी हो सकता है। उनके काले बाल और आभूषण उनकी शोभा बढ़ा रहे थे, लेकिन यह शोभा रावण के लिए विनाश का कारण बनने वाली थी। रावण का उनसे बोलना अंधकार का प्रकाश को ललकारने जैसा है। यहाँ सीता की तुलना उस सूर्य से की गई है जिसकी ओर देखना भी कठिन होता है।
