प्रतिपेदे स्वकम् रूपम् रावणो राक्षस अधिपः ।
रक्त अंबर धरः तस्थौ स्त्री रत्नम् प्रेक्ष्य मैथिलीम् ॥ ॥३-४९-९॥
pratipede svakam rūpam rāvaṇo rākṣasa adhipaḥ । rakta aṃbara dharaḥ tasthau strī ratnam prekṣya maithilīm ॥ ॥3-49-9॥
Translation
Ravana, the Lord of Rakshasas, resumed his own form. Wearing blood-red garments, he stood staring fixedly at Maithili, the jewel among women.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राक्षसराज रावण ने अपना वास्तविक रूप धारण कर लिया। लाल वस्त्र पहने हुए वह स्त्रियों में रत्न समान सीता (मैथिली) को एकटक देखते हुए खड़ा हो गया।
English Commentary
Ravana is described wearing red garments (rakta ambara), a color traditionally associated with executioners, death, and intense passion in this context. He views Sita not as a divine mother figure but as stri ratnam—a jewel among women, an object to be possessed. This objectification is central to Ravana's adharma. He stands staring at her, his intimidation tactics now fully deployed. The verse juxtaposes the purity of 'Maithili' (daughter of the holy land Mithila) against the crude, aggressive nature of the Rakshasa king.

यहाँ रावण के वस्त्रों का रंग 'रक्त' (लाल) बताया गया है, जो हिंसा, मृत्यु और काम-वासना का प्रतीक है। वह सीता को 'स्त्री रत्न' के रूप में देख रहा है—यानी एक वस्तु जिसे उसे प्राप्त करना है, न कि एक जीवित व्यक्ति के रूप में। 'प्रेक्ष्य' शब्द यहाँ उसकी लोलुप दृष्टि को दर्शाता है। रावण का राजा के रूप में खड़ा होना यह जताता है कि वह याचना करने नहीं, बल्कि अधिकार जताने आया है। सीता की पवित्रता और रावण की दूषित दृष्टि के बीच का यह संघर्ष यहाँ स्पष्ट होता है।
