माम् भजस्व चिराय त्वम् अहम् श्लाघ्यः पतिः तव ।
न एव च अहम् क्वचित् भद्रे करिष्ये तव विप्रियम् ॥ ॥३-४९-१२॥
mām bhajasva cirāya tvam aham ślāghyaḥ patiḥ tava । na eva ca aham kvacit bhadre kariṣye tava vipriyam ॥ ॥3-49-12॥
Translation
Serve me for a long time; I will be a praiseworthy husband to you. O gentle lady, I will never do anything displeasing to you.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तुम बहुत समय तक मेरी सेवा (भजन) करो, मैं तुम्हारे लिए एक प्रशंसनीय पति सिद्ध होऊँगा। हे भद्रे! मैं कभी भी तुम्हारे लिए कुछ अप्रिय नहीं करूँगा।
English Commentary
Ravana makes promises that are ironically contradictory to his actions. He claims he will never do anything 'displeasing' (vipriyam) to her, yet he is in the very act of traumatizing and abducting her. He asks her to 'serve' or accept him (bhajasva), promising to be a praiseworthy husband. This reflects the transactional nature of his affection—he offers comfort in exchange for submission. He fails to understand that for a Pativrata like Sita, the only 'pleasing' thing is being with Rama, regardless of the hardships.

रावण यहाँ साम-दाम की नीति अपना रहा है। वह वादा करता है कि वह कभी सीता का 'विप्रिय' (अप्रिय) नहीं करेगा, जबकि उनका अपहरण करना ही सबसे बड़ा अप्रिय कार्य है। यह खलनायक का विरोधाभास है। वह खुद को 'श्लाघ्यः' (प्रशंसा के योग्य) बताता है। वह सीता को 'भद्रे' (कल्याणमयी) कह रहा है, शायद इसलिए कि वह समझता है कि सीता का आगमन उसके लिए शुभ होगा, या फिर यह केवल एक औपचारिक संबोधन है। वह राम की वर्तमान स्थिति (वनवास) के मुकाबले अपने ऐश्वर्य का प्रस्ताव रख रहा है।
