Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
उद् वहेयम् भुजाभ्याम् तु मेदिनीम् अंबरे स्थितः ।
आपिबेयम् समुद्रम् च मृत्युम् हन्याम् रणे स्थितः ॥ ॥३-४९-३॥
ud vaheyam bhujābhyām tu medinīm aṃbare sthitaḥ । āpibeyam samudram ca mṛtyum hanyām raṇe sthitaḥ ॥ ॥3-49-3॥
Translation
Standing in the sky, I can lift the earth with my two arms. I can drink up the ocean and, standing in battle, I can kill Death itself.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं आकाश में स्थित होकर अपनी दोनों भुजाओं से पृथ्वी को उठा सकता हूँ। मैं समुद्र को पी सकता हूँ और युद्ध में स्थित होकर साक्षात् मृत्यु को भी मार सकता हूँ।
English Commentary
Ravana lists his cosmic capabilities to instill terror. His claims—lifting the earth, drinking the ocean—are hyperbolic assertions of dominance over the elements (earth and water). However, the climax of his boast is the claim to "kill Death" (mrityum hanyam). This reflects his conquest over Yama (the God of Death) and his belief in his own immortality. He presents himself as a force that transcends the laws of nature and mortality, making the point that relying on a mortal like Rama for protection is futile.

रावण यहाँ अपनी असंभव लगने वाली शक्तियों का बखान करता है। पृथ्वी को उठाना और समुद्र को पी जाना—ये कार्य केवल ईश्वर कोटि की शक्तियों के लिए संभव माने जाते हैं। सबसे बड़ा दावा है 'मृत्युम् हन्याम्' (मैं मृत्यु को मार सकता हूँ)। यह रावण के उस वरदान की ओर संकेत है जिसके कारण वह लगभग अमर हो गया था। वह सीता को समझाना चाहता है कि राम तो एक साधारण मनुष्य हैं, जबकि वह (रावण) प्राकृतिक नियमों और मृत्यु के भी स्वामी हैं।
