Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न एष वारयितुम् शक्यः त्वया क्रूरो निशाचर ।
सत्त्ववान् जितकाशी च स आयुधः चैव दुर्मतिः ॥ ॥३-४९-३९॥
na eṣa vārayitum śakyaḥ tvayā krūro niśācara । sattvavān jitakāśī ca sa āyudhaḥ caiva durmatiḥ ॥ ॥3-49-39॥
Translation
This cruel night-roamer cannot be stopped by you. He is powerful, arrogant, armed, and wicked-minded.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(हे तात!) यह क्रूर निशाचर आपसे रोका नहीं जा सकेगा (आप इसे हरा नहीं पाएंगे)। यह बलवान है, अभिमानी (विजयी जैसा दिखने वाला) है, हथियारों से लैस है और दुष्ट बुद्धि वाला है।
English Commentary
In a display of compassion and realism, Sita discourages Jatayu from physically engaging Ravana. She assesses the enemy: Ravana is krūro (cruel), sattvavān (strong/energetic), sa āyudhaḥ (armed with weapons), and jitakāśī (shining with the arrogance of victory). She tells Jatayu, 'He cannot be stopped by you.' This is not an insult to Jatayu's valor but a protective warning from a daughter-in-law to an elder. She fears the outcome of a battle between an unarmed, old bird and an armed, mighty demon.

सीता यहाँ अत्यंत व्यावहारिकता (pragmatism) का परिचय देती हैं। वे जटायु को युद्ध के लिए नहीं उकसातीं क्योंकि वे जानती हैं कि जटायु वृद्ध हैं और रावण 'स आयुधः' (शस्त्रों से युक्त) और 'सत्त्ववान्' (बलशाली) है। वे जटayu के प्राणों की रक्षा करना चाहती हैं। 'जितकाशी' का अर्थ है जो हमेशा जीतने का दंभ भरता हो। सीता का यह कथन जटayu के प्रति उनकी दया और चिंता को दर्शाता है। वे नहीं चाहतीं कि उनकी रक्षा के प्रयास में उनके श्वशुर-तुल्य जटayu मारे जाएं।
