Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
दश आस्यो विंशति भुजो बभूव क्षणदा चरः ।
स परिव्राजक च्छद्म महाकायो विहाय तत् ॥ ॥३-४९-८॥
daśa āsyo viṃśati bhujo babhūva kṣaṇadā caraḥ । sa parivrājaka cchadma mahākāyo vihāya tat ॥ ॥3-49-8॥
Translation
That night-roamer (Rakshasa) abandoned the disguise of a wandering mendicant and assumed his true gigantic form, possessing ten heads and twenty arms.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस निशाचर (रावण) ने उस परिव्राजक (संन्यासी) के छद्म वेश को त्याग दिया और वह दस मुखों और बीस भुजाओं वाला विशालकाय शरीर धारण करके प्रकट हो गया।
English Commentary
This verse describes the revelation of the Dashanana (ten-headed one). By abandoning the parivrajaka (mendicant) guise, Ravana reveals that his piety was merely a tool for deception. The ten heads and twenty arms symbolize supernatural strength and an all-consuming capability. In literary symbolism, the ten heads often represent the ten senses (5 senses of action, 5 of perception) gone awry, lacking the control of the intellect (represented by Rama). The sheer scale of his 'gigantic body' (mahākāya) is intended to paralyze Sita with fear, asserting his dominance over her physically.

यह श्लोक रावण के विश्वविख्यात 'दशानन' रूप के प्रकट होने का वर्णन करता है। 'परिव्राजक च्छद्म' (संन्यासी का कपट) का त्याग करना धर्म के मुखौटे के गिरने जैसा है। दस सिर और बीस भुजाएँ उसकी अपार शारीरिक शक्ति और चारों दिशाओं में नजर रखने वाली दृष्टि का प्रतीक हैं। आध्यात्मिक दृष्टिकोण से, दस सिर दस इंद्रियों के भोग और अनियंत्रित मन का भी प्रतीक माने जाते हैं। सीता के सामने अब एक साधारण ब्राह्मण नहीं, बल्कि त्रिलोक को कपाने वाला महाकाय राक्षस खड़ा था। यह दृश्य सीता को मानसिक रूप से तोड़ने के लिए पर्याप्त था।
