इह एव सह वैदेह्या मुहूर्तम् तिष्ठ लक्ष्मण ।
यावत् जानामि अहम् व्यक्तम् क एष द्युतिमान् रथे ॥ ॥३-५-१९॥
iha eva saha vaidehyā muhūrtam tiṣṭha lakṣmaṇa । yāvat jānāmi aham vyaktam ka eṣa dyutimān rathe ॥ ॥3-5-19॥
Translation
Stay right here with Vaidehi (Sita) for a moment, O Lakshmana, until I clearly ascertain who this radiant person in the chariot is.

हे लक्ष्मण! तुम वैदेही (सीता) के साथ यहीं एक मुहूर्त के लिए रुको, जब तक कि मैं यह स्पष्ट रूप से जान लूँ कि रथ में बैठा यह दीप्तिमान पुरुष कौन है।
English Commentary
Even though Rama initially identified the visitor as Shatakratu, his warrior instinct dictates caution. This verse displays Rama’s protective prioritization. He instructs Lakshmana to stay back with Sita (Vaidehi), ensuring her safety is not compromised while investigating an unknown, albeit divine, entity. The forest is a place of illusion (maya), where appearances can be deceiving. Rama uses the phrase yavat janami aham vyaktam (until I ascertain clearly), showing his intent to verify the identity beyond doubt before exposing his family to it. It illustrates the protocol of engagement: the leader advances first to assess potential threats or allies. Rama does not get swept away by the spectacle; his primary dharma as a husband and protector remains his operational focus.
