अब्रवीत् भ्रातरम् रामो लक्ष्मणम् दीप्त तेजसम् ।
कष्टम् वनम् इदम् दुर्गम् न च स्मो वन गोचराः ॥ ॥३-५-२॥
abravīt bhrātaram rāmo lakṣmaṇam dīpta tejasam |
kaṣṭam vanam idam durgam na ca smo vana gocarāḥ ॥3-5-2॥
Translation
Rama spoke to his brother Lakshmana, who possessed radiant energy: "This forest is miserable and difficult to traverse (like a fortress), and we are not accustomed to roaming in the wild."
हिंदी अनुवाद
दीप्तिमान तेज वाले भाई लक्ष्मण से श्रीराम ने कहा— "यह वन बड़ा कष्टप्रद और दुर्गम (किला-समान) है, और हम वन में विचरण करने के अभ्यस्त नहीं हैं।"
English Commentary
Here, Rama acknowledges the harsh reality of forest life with pragmatism. Despite being a warrior trained in statecraft, the life of a 'Vana-gochara' (forest dweller) is alien to princes accustomed to civilization. The word 'Durgam' implies that the forest is like a fortress, impenetrable and dangerous. This interaction highlights Rama's humility and his close bond with Lakshmana, sharing his concerns about the inhospitable terrain of Dandakaranya before they delve deeper.

श्रीराम यहाँ यथार्थवादी दृष्टिकोण अपनाते हुए वनवास की कठोरता को स्वीकार करते हैं। यद्यपि वे क्षत्रिय हैं और युद्धकला में निपुण हैं, किन्तु 'वन-गोचर' (वनवासी) जैसा जीवन अयोध्या के राजकुमारों के लिए नवीन है। 'दुर्गम्' शब्द वन की अगम्यता को दर्शाता है, जिसका अर्थ है जहाँ जाना कठिन हो। यह श्लोक श्रीराम के मानवीय पक्ष और अपने अनुज लक्ष्मण के साथ उनके पारदर्शी संवाद को उजागर करता है। दंडकारण्य के घने वनों में प्रवेश करते समय यह सतर्कता आवश्यक थी।
