ततः समभिगच्छन्तम् प्रेक्ष्य रामम् शची पतिः ।
शरभंगम् अनुज्ञाप्य विबुधान् इदम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥३-५-२१॥
tataḥ samabhigacchantam prekṣya rāmam śacī patiḥ । śarabhaṃgam anujñāpya vibudhān idam abravīt ॥ ॥3-5-21॥
Translation
Then, seeing Rama approaching, the Lord of Shachi (Indra) took leave of Sarabhanga and spoke these words to the gods.

तब राम को पास आते देख, शचीपति (इन्द्र) ने शरभंग मुनि से अनुमति (विदा) लेकर देवताओं से यह बात कही।
English Commentary
This verse marks a critical theological turning point. Indra, seeing Rama approach, decides not to meet him. Instead, he takes leave (anujnapya) of Sage Sarabhanga and addresses the other gods. Why does Indra avoid Rama? The commentary tradition explains that this is to preserve the integrity of Rama’s incarnation. Rama must defeat Ravana as a human, unaware of his full divinity as Vishnu. A direct meeting with Indra, where Indra might bow or offer praise, could prematurely reveal Rama's supreme nature or break his immersion in the human role (nara-lila). By withdrawing, Indra respects the constraints of the Avatar. His respectful departure from the sage highlights the hierarchy where even the King of Gods respects the spiritual authority of a Brahmarishi. This moment underscores the silent coordination between the celestial plan and earthly events.
