Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
इह उपयाति असौ रामो यावन् माम् न अभिभाषते ।
निष्ठाम् नयत तावत् तु ततो मा द्रष्टुम् अर्हति ॥ ॥३-५-२२॥
iha upayāti asau rāmo yāvan mām na abhibhāṣate । niṣṭhām nayata tāvat tu tato mā draṣṭum arhati ॥ ॥3-5-22॥
Translation
Here comes Rama. Before he speaks to me, you all should bring this interaction to a close (depart). He deserves to see me only after he has accomplished his task (conclusion of the war).
हिंदी अनुवाद
यह राम यहाँ आ रहे हैं। इससे पहले कि वे मुझसे बात करें (या मुझे देखें), आप लोग (मेरी इस यात्रा को/कार्य को) समाप्त करें (प्रस्थान करें)। वे मुझे (रावण वध रूपी कार्य की) समाप्ति के बाद ही देखने योग्य होंगे।
English Commentary
Indra instructs the gods to depart before Rama can engage with them. The phrase nishtham nayata is interpreted as concluding the current divine visitation to avoid direct contact. Indra’s logic is theological necessity: Rama must defeat Ravana as a human (nara). If Indra, the King of Gods, were to interact with Rama now, it might trigger Rama’s latent divine memory or publicly reveal his divinity, thereby violating the conditions of Ravana’s bane (who can only be killed by a human). Indra states that Rama deserves to see him only after the task is done. This delay underscores the gravity of Rama’s mission—even the gods must step aside and wait for the human hero to fulfill his destiny through struggle and dharma, rather than offering him divine shortcuts.

इस श्लोक में इन्द्र देवताओं को निर्देश दे रहे हैं कि वे राम से मिले बिना ही प्रस्थान करें। 'निष्ठाम् नयत' का अर्थ है 'कार्य को समाप्ति तक ले जाना' या संदर्भानुसार 'यहाँ से प्रस्थान करना'। इन्द्र का तर्क अत्यंत गहरा है। यदि राम अभी इन्द्र से मिलते हैं, तो राम को अपने दिव्य स्वरूप का स्मरण हो सकता है, जिससे 'नर-लीला' (मनुष्य रूप में अभिनय) में बाधा आ सकती है। रावण को वरदान था कि वह केवल मनुष्य के हाथों मरेगा। अतः राम का यह विश्वास बना रहना आवश्यक है कि वे एक साधारण मनुष्य हैं। इन्द्र कहते हैं कि 'ततो मा द्रष्टुम् अर्हति'—अर्थात् जब राम रावण का वध करके अपना अवतार-कार्य पूर्ण कर लेंगे, तभी वे मुझे देखने (मुझसे मिलने) के पात्र होंगे। यह देवताओं का राम के प्रति गुप्त सहयोग है।
