अहम् एव आहरिष्यामि सर्वान् लोकान् महामुने ।
आवासम् तु अहम् इच्छामि प्रदिष्टम् इह कानने ॥ ॥३-५-३३॥
aham eva āhariṣyāmi sarvān lokān mahāmune । āvāsam tu aham icchāmi pradiṣṭam iha kānane ॥ ॥3-5-33॥
Translation
O great sage, I myself shall earn all those worlds. I only desire to know of a designated dwelling place here in this forest.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे महामुनि! उन सभी लोकों को मैं स्वयं (अपने पराक्रम से) प्राप्त कर लूँगा। मैं तो बस इस वन में रहने के लिए कोई निर्दिष्ट (उचित) स्थान चाहता हूँ।
English Commentary
This is one of the definitive verses of Rama’s character. His refusal—aham eva aharishyami (I alone will earn/acquire)—encapsulates the essence of the Kshatriya Dharma: relying on one's own prowess (purushartha) rather than charity. Even though he is the Supreme Lord, within the human drama (nara-lila), he insists on walking the path of struggle to attain high status. He gently pivots the conversation from celestial rewards to immediate earthly needs, asking only for a avasam (dwelling place). By asking for guidance instead of merit, he honors the sage’s wisdom while preserving his own independence.

यह श्लोक राम के चरित्र की रीढ़ है। 'अहम् एव आहरिष्यामि' (मैं स्वयं अर्जित करूँगा)—यह क्षत्रिय धर्म की गर्जना है। राम परोपजीवी नहीं हैं; वे अपने बाहुबल और धर्मपालन से लोकों को जीतना चाहते हैं, दान में नहीं। यह हमें सिखाता है कि आत्म-सम्मान और पुरुषार्थ ही जीवन का आधार होना चाहिए। इसके बाद, राम अत्यंत विनम्रता से अपने वर्तमान वनवास धर्म का पालन करते हुए केवल 'आवास' (रहने का स्थान) मांगते हैं। वे ऋषि को यह अनुभव नहीं होने देते कि उनका दान ठुकरा दिया गया, बल्कि वे ऋषि से मार्गदर्शन मांगकर उनका मान बढ़ाते हैं। यह राम की व्यवहार कुशलता है।
