Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
इमाम् मन्दाकिनीम् राम प्रतिस्रोतम् अनुव्रज ।
नदीम् पुष्पोडुप वहाम् ततः तत्र गमिष्यसि ॥ ॥३-५-३७॥
imām mandākinīm rāma pratisrotam anuvraja । nadīm puṣpoḍupa vahām tataḥ tatra gamiṣyasi ॥ ॥3-5-37॥
Translation
O Rama, follow this Mandakini river upstream (against the current), which carries rafts of flowers. By doing so, you will reach there.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राम! तुम फूलों की नौकाओं (या फूलों के समूह) को बहाने वाली इस 'मन्दाकिनी' नदी के 'प्रतिस्रोत' (धारा की विपरीत दिशा/upstream) में जाओ। तब तुम वहां पहुँच जाओगे।
English Commentary
This verse serves as a geographical marker. Rama is told to follow the river Mandakini—not the Himalayan tributary of the Ganges, but a river in the Dandakaranya forest named after it by homesick or pious ascetics (likely the modern-day Payaswini or a tributary of Godavari). The instruction pratisrotam (against the current/upstream) suggests an ascent into deeper or higher forest terrain. The river is described poetically as pushpa-udupa-vaham (carrying rafts of flowers), indicating either the density of fallen flora or the floral offerings made by upstream ascetics floating down. It paints a serene picture of the path Rama is to take.
