तस्य रोमाणि केशाम् च तदा वह्निः महात्मनः ।
जीर्णम् त्वचम् तद् अस्थीनि यत् च मांसम् च शोणितम् ॥ ॥३-५-४०॥
tasya romāṇi keśām ca tadā vahniḥ mahātmanaḥ । jīrṇām tvacam tad asthīni yat ca māṃsam ca śoṇitam ॥ ॥3-5-40॥
Translation
Then the fire consumed the body hair, the hair on the head, the old skin, the bones, and whatever flesh and blood there was of that great soul.

तब उस अग्नि ने उन महात्मा (शरभंग) के रोम, केश, पुरानी त्वचा, हड्डियों, मांस और रक्त को जला दिया।
English Commentary
Valmiki provides a graphic anatomical inventory of what the fire consumed—hair, skin, bones, flesh, blood. This stark realism serves a philosophical purpose: it underscores the materiality of the human vessel. The fire strips away the biological layers that define mortal existence. By explicitly listing these perishable parts, the text emphasizes that these elements are mere coverings (upadhi). The use of the word jirnam (old/worn out) reinforces that the sage is merely disposing of a dilapidated vehicle. The fire acts as the great purifier, reducing the gross body to ash to facilitate the release of the subtle form.

वाल्मीकि जी यहाँ शरीर की नश्वरता और भौतिकता का यथार्थ चित्रण करते हैं। अग्नि अपना धर्म निभाती है—वह पंचभूतों से बने शरीर को जलाती है। रोम, केश, अस्थि, मांस, रक्त—ये सब 'जीर्ण' (पुराने/नाशवान) थे। इस वर्णन का उद्देश्य यह दिखाना है कि जो जला, वह शरभंग का 'वास्तविक' स्वरूप नहीं था, बल्कि वह केवल एक जैविक ढांचा था। 'महात्मनः' शब्द का प्रयोग यह याद दिलाता है कि शरीर के जलने पर भी आत्मा (महात्मा) अछूती है। यह प्रक्रिया एक शुद्धि (purification) की तरह है, जहाँ मलिन अंश (मांस-रक्त) भस्म हो जाता है ताकि दिव्य अंश प्रकट हो सके।
