तम् शब्दम् अवसुप्तस्य जटायुः अथ शुश्रुवे ।
निरैक्षत् रावणम् क्षिप्रम् वैदेहीम् च ददर्श सः ॥ ॥३-५०-१॥
tam śabdam avasuptasya jaṭāyuḥ atha śuśruve । niraikṣat rāvaṇam kṣipram vaidehīm ca dadarśa saḥ ॥ ॥3-50-1॥
Translation
Then Jatayu, who was asleep, heard that sound. He quickly looked at Ravana and also saw Vaidehi.

तब उस (वृक्ष पर) सोए हुए जटायु ने उस (सीता के विलाप के) शब्द को सुना। उसने शीघ्र ही रावण को (ध्यान से) देखा और वैदेही (सीता) को भी देखा।
English Commentary
This opens Sarga 50. Jatayu is introduced as avasuptasya (asleep/dozing), emphasizing that he was taken by surprise. However, upon hearing the distress call, his reaction is swift (kṣipram). He observes the scene carefully: identifying the aggressor (Ravana) and the victim (Vaidehi). The juxtaposition of seeing the powerful demon and the helpless princess stirs the dormant warrior instinct in the old bird. It sets the stage for his heroic intervention.

यहाँ से सर्ग 50 (Sarga 50) का प्रारंभ होता है। जटायु 'अवसुप्तस्य' (सोए हुए) थे, जो उनकी वृद्धावस्था और निश्चिंतता को दर्शाता है। सीता की करुण पुकार ने उन्हें जगा दिया। 'शुश्रुवे' (सुना) और फिर 'निरैक्षत्' (निरीक्षण किया/देखा) क्रियाएँ जटayu की त्वरित प्रतिक्रिया को दिखाती हैं। उन्होंने स्थिति का तुरंत आकलन किया—पहले शत्रु (रावण) को देखा और फिर पीड़िता (सीता) को। यह एक योद्धा की दृष्टि है जो खतरे और रक्षा के पात्र दोनों को पहचान लेता है।
