ततः पर्वत शृंग आभः तीक्ष्ण तुण्डः खग उत्तमः ।
वनस्पति गतः श्रीमान् व्याजहार शुभाम् गिरम् ॥ ॥३-५०-२॥
tataḥ parvata śṛṃga ābhaḥ tīkṣṇa tuṇḍaḥ khaga uttamaḥ । vanaspati gataḥ śrīmān vyājahāra śubhām giram ॥ ॥3-50-2॥
Translation
Then, the best of birds, resembling a mountain peak, with a sharp beak, majestic and perched on the tree, uttered auspicious words.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब पर्वत के शिखर के समान विशाल शरीर वाले, तीखी चोंच वाले, पक्षियों में श्रेष्ठ और शोभा संपन्न (श्रीमान) उस जटायु ने वृक्ष पर बैठे-बैठे ही (रावण से) शुभ वचन कहे।
English Commentary
Valmiki describes Jatayu's majestic form before he speaks. He is mountain-like (parvata śṛṃga ābhaḥ) and has a sharp beak (tīkṣṇa tuṇḍaḥ), indicating he is physically formidable despite his age. Significantly, he utters śubhām giram (auspicious/righteous words). Instead of screeching in rage, he speaks with dignity and moral authority. This characterizes Jatayu not just as a beast, but as a wise elder (Sriman) attempting to counsel a wayward king (Ravana) back to the path of Dharma before resorting to force.

जटायु का वर्णन अत्यंत प्रभावशाली है। वे 'पर्वत शृंग आभः' (पर्वत की चोटी जैसे विशाल) और 'तीक्ष्ण तुण्डः' (तीखी चोंच वाले) हैं। वे केवल पक्षी नहीं, 'खग उत्तमः' (पक्षियों में श्रेष्ठ) हैं। क्रूर रावण के सामने भी, जटayu ने 'शुभाम् गिरम्' (कल्याणकारी/नीतिपूर्ण वाणी) का प्रयोग किया। उन्होंने तुरंत आक्रमण नहीं किया, बल्कि पहले धर्म और नीति की बात कहकर रावण को समझाने का प्रयास किया। यह उनके 'श्रीमान' (मर्यादित/शोभायमान) व्यक्तित्व का परिचायक है। युद्ध से पहले साम (समझाना) का प्रयोग वीरों का लक्षण है।
