विषये वा पुरे वा ते यदा रामो महाबलः ।
न अपराध्यति धर्मात्मा कथम् तस्य अपराध्यसि ॥ ॥३-५०-१३॥
Viṣaye vā pure vā te yadā Rāmo mahābalaḥ । Na aparādhyati dharmātmā katham tasya aparādhyasi ॥ ॥3-50-13॥
Translation
When the mighty and righteous Rama has committed no offense against your kingdom or your city, how/why do you commit an offense against him?

महाबली और धर्मात्मा राम ने जब तुम्हारे राज्य (विषय) या नगर (पुर) में कोई अपराध नहीं किया है, तो फिर तुम उनके प्रति अपराध क्यों कर रहे हो?
English Commentary
Jatayu questions the justification for Ravana's hostility. In the code of conduct between rulers, aggression requires provocation. Jatayu points out that Rama has not transgressed against Ravana’s "Visaya" (territory) or "Pura" (capital city). By emphasizing Rama as "Dharmātmā" (righteous soul), Jatayu highlights Rama's innocence. The question "Why do you offend him?" underlines the irrationality of Ravana’s actions. It frames Ravana not as an avenger taking just retribution, but as an unprovoked aggressor. This destroys any moral high ground Ravana might claim. It clarifies that the conflict is entirely of Ravana's making, born out of malice rather than justice.

जटayu यहाँ युद्ध और दंडनीति के नियमों का उल्लेख कर रहे हैं। किसी पर आक्रमण करने के लिए 'कारण' (Casus Belli) होना चाहिए। राम ने न तो लंका ('पुर') पर हमला किया, न ही रावण के अधीन किसी क्षेत्र ('विषय') पर कब्जा किया। राम 'धर्मात्मा' हैं, उन्होंने अकारण किसी राक्षस को नहीं सताया। जटayu पूछते हैं—'कथम् तस्य अपराध्यसि?' (तुम उनका अपराध क्यों कर रहे हो?)। यह प्रश्न रावण के कार्य को अन्यायपूर्ण और कायरतापूर्ण सिद्ध करता है। बिना उकसावे के शत्रुता करना (Unprovoked aggression) राजनीति और धर्म दोनों की दृष्टि से गलत है। यह रावण की असुरक्षा और ईर्ष्या को उजागर करता है।
