अत्र ब्रूहि यथा तत्त्वम् को रामस्य व्यतिक्रमः ।
यस्य त्वम् लोक नाथस्य हृत्वा भार्याम् गमिष्यसि ॥३-५०-१५॥
atra brūhi yathā tattvam ko rāmasya vyatikramaḥ |
yasya tvam loka nāthasya hṛtvā bhāryām gamiṣyasi ॥3-50-15॥
Translation
Tell me truthfully, what is the transgression of Rama, whose wife you are stealing away? He is the protector of the world.

यहाँ यथार्थ रूप से बताओ कि श्रीराम का क्या अपराध है? जिन लोकनाथ (जगत् के स्वामी) की पत्नी का अपहरण करके तुम जा रहे हो।
English Commentary
Here, Jatayu assumes the role of a righteous elder and a judge. Before engaging in combat, he demands to know the casus belli—the justification for Ravana's action. He asks for the specific 'vyatikrama' (transgression or violation of conduct) committed by Rama that would warrant such retaliation. By referring to Rama as 'Loka Nathasya' (Lord/Protector of the Worlds), Jatayu emphasizes that Rama is a upholder of Dharma, making it unlikely he committed a crime justifying this abduction. It highlights Jatayu’s adherence to proper conduct (Niti) even in the face of an aggressor, giving the enemy a chance to explain himself before the inevitable conflict.

यहाँ जटायु एक धर्मात्मा और नीतिज्ञ वृद्ध की भांति रावण से प्रश्न कर रहे हैं। युद्ध आरम्भ करने से पूर्व, वे रावण के इस दुष्कर्म का कारण जानना चाहते हैं। 'व्यतिक्रम' का अर्थ है मर्यादा का उल्लंघन या अपराध। जटायु रावण को चुनौती देते हैं कि वह श्रीराम का कोई ऐसा दोष बताए जिसके प्रतिशोध में वह ऐसा नीच कर्म कर रहा है। श्रीराम को 'लोकनाथ' कहकर जटायु यह स्पष्ट करते हैं कि श्रीराम सामान्य मानव नहीं, अपितु लोकों के रक्षक हैं, और उनकी पत्नी का हरण करके रावण अपने विनाश को आमंत्रित कर रहा है। यह श्लोक जटायु की न्यायप्रियता और रावण के कृत्य की तर्कहीनता को दर्शाता है।
