Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
वृद्धो अहम् त्वम् युवा धन्वी स रथः कवची शरी ।
न च अपि आदाय कुशली वैदेहीम् न गमिष्यसि ॥३-५०-२१॥
vṛddho aham tvam yuvā dhanvī sa rathaḥ kavacī śarī |
na ca api ādāya kuśalī vaidehīm na gamiṣyasi ॥3-50-21॥
Translation
I am old, while you are young, armed with a bow, riding a chariot, clad in armor, and carrying arrows. Yet, you shall not depart safely with Vaidehi.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं वृद्ध हूँ और तुम युवा हो; तुम्हारे पास धनुष, रथ, कवच और बाण सब कुछ है। फिर भी, (मेरे रहते) तुम वैदेही को लेकर सकुशल नहीं जा सकोगे।
English Commentary
This verse encapsulates the essence of heroic valor against overwhelming odds. Jatayu creates a deliberate contrast: he acknowledges his own physical disadvantage (age) against Ravana’s tactical superiority (youth, chariot, armor, weaponry). However, the conjunction 'Yet' (implied in the defiance) serves to highlight the supremacy of moral courage. By declaring that Ravana will not pass safely despite these advantages, Jatayu asserts that righteous determination outweighs material strength. It is a defiant proclamation that even an unarmed, elderly bird will become an insurmountable wall against the armed tyrant because Dharma is on his side.

यह रामायण के सबसे वीर रस पूर्ण श्लोकों में से एक है। यहाँ विरोधाभास (Contrast) के माध्यम से जटायु के अदम्य साहस का चित्रण है। एक ओर जटायु अपनी दुर्बलता (वृद्धावस्था) स्वीकार करते हैं, और दूसरी ओर रावण की सामरिक श्रेष्ठता (युवावस्था, रथ, कवच, हथियार) को गिनाते हैं। परन्तु 'न गमिष्यसि' (नहीं जा पाओगे) कहकर वे यह सिद्ध करते हैं कि युद्ध केवल हथियारों से नहीं, बल्कि आत्मबल और धर्म के बल से लड़ा जाता है। यह जटायु की निडरता है कि वे भौतिक रूप से कमजोर होते हुए भी रावण को खुली चुनौती दे रहे हैं।
