अवश्यम् तु मया कार्यम् प्रियम् तस्य महात्मनः ।
जीवितेन अपि रामस्य तथा दशरथस्य च ॥३-५०-२७॥
avaśyam tu mayā kāryam priyam tasya mahātmanaḥ |
jīvitena api rāmasya tathā daśarathasya ca ॥3-50-27॥
Translation
I must inevitably perform this task pleasing to the high-souled Rama, and also to Dasharatha, even at the cost of my own life.

मुझे अपने प्राणों की बाजी लगाकर भी उस महात्मा श्रीराम का और महाराज दशरथ का प्रिय कार्य अवश्य करना है।
English Commentary
This verse encapsulates the essence of selfless service and loyalty. Jatayu acknowledges the mortal danger he faces against the younger, heavily armed Ravana, yet he commits to the fight 'even at the cost of life' ('jīvitena api'). His motivation is twofold: affection for the 'high-souled' Rama and his enduring friendship with the late King Dasharatha. By invoking Dasharatha's name, Jatayu frames this battle as a repayment of debt to his old friend. It transforms the upcoming duel from a mere rescue mission into a sacred duty (Dharma) where the act of fighting is more important than the outcome of victory or defeat.

यह श्लोक जटायु की 'स्वामी-भक्ति' और 'मित्र-धर्म' का सर्वोच्च उदाहरण है। यहाँ जटायु यह स्पष्ट करते हैं कि सीता की रक्षा का प्रयास केवल एक नैतिक कर्तव्य नहीं, बल्कि एक व्यक्तिगत दायित्व है। वे दशरथ के पुराने मित्र हैं, और राम उनके लिए पुत्र समान हैं। 'जीवितेन अपि' (प्राण देकर भी) वाक्यांश यह दर्शाता है कि जटायु को अपनी मृत्यु का आभास है, फिर भी वे पीछे नहीं हट रहे। वे जानते हैं कि वृद्ध होने के कारण वे रावण को हरा नहीं पाएंगे, फिर भी बलिदान देना वे अपना धर्म समझते हैं। यह श्लोक क्षत्रिय धर्म और मित्रता के आदर्श को स्थापित करता है।
