तत् बभूव अद्भुतम् युद्धम् गृध्र राक्षसयोः तदा ।
सपक्षयोः माल्यवतोः महा पर्वतयोः इव ॥३-५१-३॥
tat babhūva adbhutam yuddham gṛdhra rākṣasayoḥ tadā |
sapakṣayoḥ mālyavatoḥ mahā parvatayoḥ iva ॥3-51-3॥
Translation
That battle between the Vulture and the Demon was wonderful to behold, resembling a clash between two great winged mountains of the Malyavan range.

उस समय गृध्रराज और राक्षसराज के बीच वह अद्भुत युद्ध ऐसा प्रतीत हुआ मानो पंखों वाले दो माल्यवान् नामक विशाल पर्वत लड़ रहे हों।
English Commentary
This verse employs a mythological simile invoking the ancient legend of flying mountains. Comparing Jatayu and Ravana to 'two great winged mountains' (mahā parvatayoḥ sapakṣayoḥ) emphasizes their colossal size and stability. They are not merely fighting; they are crashing into each other with the weight and solidity of geological formations. The reference to the 'Malyavan' range adds specificity and grandeur. Calling the battle 'adbhutam' (wondrous/marvelous) suggests that the spectacle transcended fear and became a display of raw, awe-inspiring power, riveting to any witness.

प्राचीन काल की मान्यताओं के अनुसार पहले पर्वतों के पंख होते थे। यहाँ उसी पौराणिक संदर्भ का प्रयोग किया गया है। जटायु स्वयं पर्वत जैसे विशाल हैं और रावण भी पर्वत समान है। 'माल्यवतोः' का संदर्भ शायद उनकी विशालता और स्थिरता को दिखाने के लिए है। 'अद्भुतम्' शब्द बताता है कि यह दृश्य साधारण नहीं था; एक पक्षी का राक्षस राजा से लड़ना अकल्पनीय था। दोनों ही विशालकाय हैं और दोनों ही प्रहार करने में सक्षम हैं। यह उपमा युद्ध की गरिमा (Grandeur) को बढ़ाती है।
