Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
संच्छिन्न बाहोः सद्यो वै बाहवः सहसा अभवन् ।
विष ज्वालावली युक्ता वल्मीकत् इव पन्नगाः ॥ ॥३-५१-३९॥
saṃchinna bāhoḥ sadyo vai bāhavaḥ sahasā abhavan । viṣa jvālāvalī yuktā valmīkat iva pannagāḥ ॥ ॥3-51-39॥
Translation
No sooner were the arms severed than new arms instantly appeared, like venomous serpents emerging from an anthill, glowing with fiery poison.
हिंदी अनुवाद
भुजाओं के कटते ही उस (रावण) की भुजाएं तत्काल पुनः उत्पन्न हो गईं, जैसे बांबी से विषैली ज्वालाओं से युक्त सर्प निकल आते हैं।
English Commentary
This verse underscores the terrifying, supernatural resilience of Ravana. Despite Jatayu's successful strike, Ravana's arms regenerate instantly due to his mystic powers (siddhis) and boons. The simile used by Valmiki is striking: the new arms popping out are compared to venomous snakes (pannagāḥ) emerging from an anthill (valmīkat). This suggests not just regeneration, but that the new limbs were just as dangerous and deadly as the ones severed. For Jatayu, this must have been a moment of profound despair—seeing his greatest effort nullified in a split second. It highlights the unequal nature of the battle: natural valor versus magical immortality. Yet, it sets the stage for Jatayu’s ultimate sacrifice, as he continues to fight despite the impossibility of victory.

यह श्लोक रावण की मायावी शक्ति और तपस्या के फल को प्रदर्शित करता है। जटायु का पुरुषार्थ महान था, किन्तु रावण को प्राप्त वरदान के कारण उसके अंग पुनः जुड़ गए। वाल्मीकि जी ने यहाँ अत्यंत सटीक उपमा दी है—'वल्मीकत् इव पन्नगाः' (जैसे बांबी से सांप निकलते हैं)। जैसे सांप विषैला और भयानक होता है, वैसे ही रावण की नई भुजाएं भी क्रूरता और शक्ति से भरी थीं। यह दृश्य जटayu के लिए अत्यंत निराशाजनक था, क्योंकि उनका सबसे बड़ा प्रहार निष्फल हो गया था। यह धर्मयुद्ध में आने वाली उस कठिन परीक्षा का प्रतीक है जहाँ शत्रु की शक्ति अजेय प्रतीत होती है। फिर भी, जटayu ने हार नहीं मानी, जो उनकी निष्ठा को और अधिक पूजनीय बनाता है।
