Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स छिन्न पक्षः सहसा रक्षसा रौद्र कर्मणा ।
निपपात महा गृध्रो धरण्याम् अल्प जीवितः ॥ ॥३-५१-४३॥
sa chinna pakṣaḥ sahasā rakṣasā raudra karmaṇā । nipapāta mahā gṛdhro dharaṇyām alpa jīvitaḥ ॥ ॥3-51-43॥
Translation
His wings severed by the demon of terrible deeds, the great vulture suddenly fell to the earth, with only a little life remaining.

उस क्रूर कर्म करने वाले राक्षस (रावण) द्वारा पंख काट दिए जाने पर, वह महागीध (जटायु) अचानक पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ा; उसके प्राण बहुत थोड़े शेष थे।
English Commentary
The imagery of the 'Great Vulture' (mahā gṛdhro) falling from the sky to the dust of the earth is poignant. Ravana is characterized by his raudra karma (terrible/cruel deeds). The phrase alpa jīvitaḥ (little life remaining) is crucial; it foreshadows that Jatayu will hang on to life just long enough to deliver the vital intelligence to Rama. Although physically grounded and dying, Jatayu’s fall is honorable. In literature, the fall of a hero often carries more weight than the victory of a villain. The vast sky was his domain, but now he lies on the earth, broken but spiritually victorious. This sets the scene for the impending pathos of Sita’s lament and Rama’s arrival.

यहाँ जटायु के पतन का दृश्य है। रावण को 'रौद्र कर्मणा' (भयानक कर्म करने वाला) कहा गया है। आकाश में उड़ने वाला 'महा गृध्र' अब असहाय होकर धरती पर गिर पड़ा है। 'अल्प जीवितः' (थोड़ा सा जीवन शेष) यह संकेत देता है कि जटायु की मृत्यु तत्काल नहीं हुई; विधाता ने उन्हें राम के दर्शन तक जीवित रखा। यह गिरना केवल शारीरिक पतन है, नैतिक पतन नहीं। जटायु ऊंचाइयों से गिरे, लेकिन कीर्ति में वे रावण से बहुत ऊपर उठ गए। धरती पर गिरना यह भी बताता है कि उनका संघर्ष अब समाप्त हो चुका है, अब केवल प्रतीक्षा शेष है—प्रभु राम की प्रतीक्षा। यह दृश्य करुणा और वीरता का अद्भुत मिश्रण है।
