तस्य तीक्ष्ण नखाभ्याम् तु चरणाभ्याम् महाबलः ।
चकार बहुधा गात्रे व्रणान् पतग सत्तमः ॥३-५१-६॥
tasya tīkṣṇa nakhābhyām tu caraṇābhyām mahābalaḥ |
cakāra bahudhā gātre vraṇān pataga sattamaḥ ॥3-51-6॥
Translation
Then, the mighty Jatayu, the best of birds, inflicted manifold wounds on Ravana's body with his two feet armed with sharp talons.

तब पक्षियों में श्रेष्ठ महाबली जटायु ने अपने तीखे नखों वाले दोनों पंजों से रावण के शरीर पर अनेक प्रकार के घाव कर दिए।
English Commentary
The momentum shifts as Jatayu launches a counter-offensive. Lacking artificial weapons, he utilizes his biological arsenal—'tīkṣṇa nakhābhyām' (sharp talons). The phrase 'cakāra bahudhā vraṇān' (made manifold wounds) indicates that this was not a superficial scratch but a savage mauling. Jatayu manages to breach Ravana's defenses and inflict physical damage on the demon king's body. This verse highlights the primal ferocity of the bird and validates his earlier threat to offer the 'hospitality of battle'.

अब जटायु के पलटवार (Counter-attack) की बारी है। चूंकि उनके पास धनुष-बाण नहीं हैं, वे अपने प्राकृतिक आयुधों—तीखे नखों और पंजों—का प्रयोग करते हैं। 'बहुधा गात्रे व्रणान्' बताता है कि उन्होंने रावण को बुरी तरह नोच डाला और उसे लहूलुहान कर दिया। यह रावण के लिए अपमानजनक है कि एक पक्षी उसे आहत कर रहा है। 'पतग सत्तमः' (पक्षियों में सत्तम/श्रेष्ठ) विशेषण उनके इस पराक्रम को सराहने के लिए प्रयुक्त हुआ है। यह सिद्ध करता है कि जटायु वृद्ध होने के बावजूद अभी भी एक घातक योद्धा हैं।
