राक्षसेन्द्र समाधूतम् तस्याः तत् वदनम् शुभम् ।
शुशुभे न विना रामम् दिवा चन्द्र इव उदितः ॥ ॥३-५२-२२॥
rākṣasendra samādhūtam tasyāḥ tat vadanam śubham । śuśubhe na vinā rāmam divā candra iva uditaḥ ॥ ॥3-52-22॥
Translation
Her auspicious face, shaken by the lord of Rakshasas, did not shine without Rama, appearing like the moon risen during the day.

राक्षसों के राजा (रावण) द्वारा कम्पित (या पकड़ा हुआ) उनका वह शुभ मुख, राम के बिना वैसे ही शोभा नहीं दे रहा था जैसे दिन में उगा हुआ चंद्रमा।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses the simile of the 'daytime moon' ('diva chandra') to describe Sita’s face. The moon is visible during the day but lacks its characteristic nocturnal brilliance and magic; it appears pale and washed out. Similarly, without Rama, Sita’s face, though structurally beautiful ('shubham'), lacks its true vitality and radiance. The word 'samadhutam' suggests she is being jostled or shaken by the Demon King, adding physical discomfort to her emotional despair. This verse poignantly conveys that Sita’s true glory is inextricably linked to Rama’s presence.

यहाँ 'दिवा चन्द्र इव' (दिन के चंद्रमा की भांति) की उपमा बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है। दिन में चंद्रमा आकाश में होता तो है, पर सूर्य के प्रकाश के कारण उसकी अपनी चमक फीकी पड़ जाती है; वह निस्तेज और उदास दिखता है। इसी प्रकार, सीता जी का 'शुभ' मुख रावण की कैद में और राम की अनुपस्थिति में निस्तेज हो गया है। 'समाधूतम्' का अर्थ है कम्पित होना या बुरी तरह हिलाया जाना, जो यात्रा की गति और रावण की कठोर पकड़ को दर्शाता है। यह श्लोक सीता के मानसिक और शारीरिक कष्ट को उनकी फीकी पड़ती आभा के माध्यम से व्यक्त करता है।
