Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
उत्पात वात अभिहता नाना द्विज गण आयुताः ।
मा भैः इति विधूत अग्रा व्याजह्रुः इव पादपाः ॥ ॥३-५२-३४॥
utpāta vāta abhihatā nānā dvija gaṇa āyutāḥ । mā bhaiḥ iti vidhūta agrā vyājahruḥ iva pādapāḥ ॥ ॥3-52-34॥
Translation
Struck by the chaotic wind (generated by Ravana's flight), the trees filled with various flocks of birds shook their treetops, as if saying "Do not fear!"
हिंदी अनुवाद
रावण के उड़ने से उत्पन्न आंधी ('उत्पात वात') से हिलते हुए और अनेक पक्षियों से युक्त वृक्ष, अपनी डालियों (अग्रभाग) को हिलाकर मानो कह रहे थे— "डरो मत! (मा भैः)।"
English Commentary
Valmiki personifies nature here. The trees are buffeted by the strong wind ('utpata vata') caused by Ravana's flight. Their swaying tops ('vidhuta agra') are interpreted by the poet as a gesture of comfort, as if they are waving their hands and calling out, "Ma bhaih" ("Fear not"). The birds ('dvija') residing in them add their voices to this imagined chorus of support. It highlights the helplessness of nature; the trees want to help the wife of the Dharma-keeper, but they can only offer a gesture of solidarity, not physical intervention.

अब कवि प्रकृति की प्रतिक्रिया का वर्णन करते हैं। रावण के वेग से हवा में हलचल ('उत्पात वात') मच गई है। नीचे धरती पर स्थित वृक्ष जोर-जोर से हिल रहे हैं। कवि उत्प्रेक्षा अलंकार का प्रयोग करते हुए कहते हैं कि वृक्षों का हिलना ऐसा लग रहा है मानो वे हाथ हिलाकर सीता को ढाढस बंधा रहे हों और कह रहे हों "मा भैः" (डरो मत)। यद्यपि वृक्ष जड़ (अचल) हैं और कुछ कर नहीं सकते, फिर भी यह प्रकृति की मूक सहानुभूति (Silent Sympathy) को दर्शाता है। पक्षियों का कोलाहल उस संदेश की ध्वनि बन गया है।
