स तान् दृष्ट्वा महावीर्यो वर दानेन मोहितः ।
उवाच तान् इदम् वाक्यम् प्रशस्य बल वीर्यतः ॥ ॥३-५४-१९॥
sa tān dṛṣṭvā mahāvīryo vara dānena mohitaḥ । uvāca tān idam vākyam praśasya bala vīryataḥ ॥ ॥3-54-19॥
Translation
Seeing them, he of great valor, deluded by the boons granted to him, praised their strength and heroism and spoke these words to them.

उन (राक्षसों) को देखकर, वरदानों के प्रभाव से मोहित उस महावीर्यवान (रावण) ने उनके बल और पराक्रम की प्रशंसा करके उनसे यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
This verse provides a crucial insight into Ravana's psyche through the phrase vara dānena mohitaḥ (deluded by the gift of boons). Despite the recent annihilation of his vast army by a mere human (Rama), Ravana remains blinded by the arrogance derived from his boons of invincibility against gods and demons. He underestimates the human threat because his boons did not explicitly protect him from humans. He praises the eight Rakshasas (praśasya) to motivate them. This is a classic leadership tactic: flattery before assigning a high-risk mission. He validates their strength to ensure their loyalty and confidence before sending them into the very territory where his other forces were slaughtered. The verse juxtaposes his external might (mahāvīryo) with his internal blindness (mohitaḥ), foreshadowing his eventual downfall due to hubris.

वाल्मीकि यहाँ रावण के चरित्र की एक महत्वपूर्ण कमजोरी को उजागर करते हैं—'वर दानेन मोहितः'। रावण ब्रह्मा और शिव से मिले वरदानों के कारण अहंकार में इतना चूर है कि उसे अपनी अपराजित होने की भ्रांति है। यद्यपि राम ने उसके भाइयों (खर-दूषण) और १४,००० राक्षसों का वध कर दिया है, फिर भी रावण इस सत्य को स्वीकार नहीं कर पा रहा है कि कोई मनुष्य उसे हरा सकता है। वह उन आठ राक्षसों की प्रशंसा करता है। यह नेतृत्व का एक गुण है—कठिन कार्य सौंपने से पहले अधीनस्थों का मनोबल बढ़ाना। वह उनके बल और वीर्य (शौर्य) की सराहना करता है ताकि वे प्रेरित होकर जनस्थान जैसे खतरनाक क्षेत्र में जाने को तैयार हो जाएं, जहाँ मृत्यु का तांडव हुआ था। रावण का अहंकार ही उसके विनाश का बीज है, जो यहाँ स्पष्ट दिखाई देता है।
