बह्वीनाम् उत्तम स्त्रीणाम् मम यो असौ परिग्रहः ।
तासाम् त्वम् ईश्वरी सीते मम भार्या भव प्रिये ॥ ॥३-५५-१७॥
bahvīnām uttama strīṇām mama yo asau parigrahaḥ । tāsam tvam īśvarī sīte mama bhāryā bhava priye ॥ ॥3-55-17॥
Translation
Of the many excellent women who constitute my harem (wives), become the mistress/queen of them all, O Sita. Become my wife, my dear.
हिंदी अनुवाद
अनेक उत्तम स्त्रियों का मेरा जो यह समूह (अन्तःपुर) है, उन सबकी तुम 'ईश्वरी' (स्वामिनी/महारानी) बन जाओ। हे प्रिये सीते! तुम मेरी भार्या बन जाओ।
English Commentary
Ravana addresses the existence of his harem. He admits to having many excellent wives (parigrahaḥ), but offers Sita the position of īśvarī (Goddess/Mistress) over them all. This is a crucial distinction; he is not asking her to join the harem as a concubine, but to rule it as the Chief Queen. He concludes with the direct request: mama bhāryā bhava (become my wife). He attempts to elevate her status above all his previous conquests, hoping that the promise of supremacy over other noble women will appeal to her vanity.

रावण अब पदानुक्रम (hierarchy) की बात करता है। उसके पास पहले से ही 'बह्वीनाम् उत्तम स्त्रीणाम्' (बहुत सी उत्तम स्त्रियां) हैं, लेकिन वह सीता को उनमें से एक नहीं, बल्कि उनकी 'ईश्वरी' (मालकिन) बनाना चाहता है। मंदोदरी जैसी रानियों के ऊपर सीता का स्थान होगा। 'मम भार्या भव' (मेरी पत्नी बन जाओ) – यह सीधा विवाह प्रस्ताव है। वह 'प्रिये' संबोधन का प्रयोग कर आत्मीयता जताने की कोशिश करता है। रावण का यह प्रस्ताव सीता के अहंकार (ego) को तुष्ट करने के लिए है—'तुम्हें किसी के साथ रावण को बांटना नहीं पड़ेगा, बल्कि तुम उन सब पर शासन करोगी'।
