Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
दर्शने मा कृथाः बुद्धिम् राघवस्य वरानने ।
का अस्य शक्तिः इह आगंतुम् अपि सीते मनोरथैः ॥ ॥३-५५-२३॥
Darśane mā kṛthāḥ buddhim rāghavasya varānane । Kā asya śaktiḥ iha āgantum api sīte manorathaiḥ ॥ ॥3-55-23॥
Translation
O lady with the beautiful face, do not set your mind on seeing Raghava again. O Sita, what power does he have to come here, even in his dreams or wishes?
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे वरानने (सुंदर मुख वाली)! तुम राघव (राम) के दर्शन की आशा (बुद्धि) मत करो। हे सीते! यहाँ (लंका में) मनोरथों (कल्पनाओं) के द्वारा भी आने की उसकी क्या शक्ति है?
English Commentary
Ravana attempts to sever Sita's emotional anchor—her hope of rescue. He commands her not to entertain thoughts of seeing Rama again. His arrogance is absolute; he asserts that Rama lacks the power to reach Lanka even "manorathaih" (by the chariot of the mind/wishes/imagination). This implies that Lanka is so impenetrable and distant that it is beyond the reach of even a thought, let alone a physical invasion by a foot-soldier human. Ravana is trying to isolate Sita psychologically. By convincing her of the impossibility of rescue, he hopes to induce a state of helplessness (learned helplessness) where she feels she has no choice but to submit to him. This verse underscores Ravana’s underestimation of the power of love, determination, and the divine will that accompanies Rama, blinded as he is by his own perceived invincibility.

इस श्लोक में रावण सीता की मानसिक शक्ति और आशा को पूरी तरह से तोड़ने का प्रयास कर रहा है। वह चाहता है कि सीता यह मान ले कि राम से पुनर्मिलन असंभव है। 'दर्शने मा कृथाः बुद्धिम्' (दर्शन की आशा छोड़ दो) कहकर वह सीता को पूर्ण निराशा (despair) में धकेलना चाहता है। रावण को अपनी लंका की सुरक्षा और समुद्र की दुर्गमता पर इतना घमंड है कि वह कहता है कि राम शरीर से तो क्या, 'मनोरथैः' (मन के रथ से या ख्यालों में) भी यहाँ नहीं आ सकते। यह रावण का अति-आत्मविश्वास (hubris) है। वह मानता है कि लंका अभेद्य है और कोई भी मानवादि शक्ति वहां प्रवेश नहीं कर सकती। रावण यहाँ मनोवैज्ञानिक युद्ध (psychological warfare) का सहारा ले रहा है, क्योंकि वह जानता है कि जब तक सीता के मन में राम के आने की आशा है, तब तक वह रावण को स्वीकार नहीं करेगी।
