Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
शोक आर्तम् तु वरारोहे न भ्राजति वर आनने ।
एवम् वदति तस्मिन् सा वस्त्र अन्तेन वर अंगना ॥ ॥३-५५-३२॥
Śoka ārtam tu varārohe na bhrājati vara ānane । Evam vadati tasmin sā vastra antena vara aṅganā ॥ ॥3-55-32॥
Translation
(Ravana continues) "O woman of beautiful hips, O lovely-faced one, your face does not shine while stricken with grief." While he was speaking thus, that excellent woman (Sita) covered her face with the end of her garment.

(रावण कहता है) "हे सुंदर अंगों वाली! हे सुमुखी! शोक से पीड़ित तुम्हारा मुख शोभित नहीं हो रहा है।" जब रावण ऐसा कह रहा था, तब उस श्रेष्ठ नारी (सीता) ने अपने वस्त्र के छोर से (अपना मुख ढंक लिया)।
English Commentary
The first half of this verse concludes Ravana's speech, where he remarks that her face, though beautiful, "na bhrajati" (does not shine) due to being "shoka artam" (stricken with grief). He implies that accepting him is the cure for this grief. The second half shifts the narrative focus to Sita's reaction. As he spoke these arrogant words, Sita, the "vara angana" (excellent woman), covered herself with "vastra antena" (the end of her garment/sari). This gesture is profound. It signifies her refusal to engage with him, her modesty, and her revulsion. By covering her face or wiping her tears, she physically and symbolically shuts him out. It creates a powerful visual contrast: Ravana boasting of expanding her world to the skies, and Sita withdrawing into the small sanctuary of her own garment, holding onto her dignity amidst despair.

यह श्लोक रावण के कथन और सीता की तत्काल प्रतिक्रिया का मिश्रण है। पहली पंक्ति में रावण कहता है कि शोक के कारण सीता का चेहरा 'न भ्राजति' (चमक नहीं रहा है), जो उसके पिछले श्लोक (कमल जैसा मुख) के साथ विरोधाभास उत्पन्न करता है; वह चाहता है कि सीता शोक छोड़े ताकि वह फिर से सुंदर दिखे। दूसरी पंक्ति में वाल्मीकि जी सीता की प्रतिक्रिया दिखाते हैं। जैसे ही रावण ये बातें कह रहा था, 'वर अंगना' (श्रेष्ठ नारी) सीता ने 'वस्त्र अन्तेन' (कपड़े के पल्लू/छोर से) अपना मुख छिपा लिया या आंसू पोंछे। यह सीता की लज्जा, विवशता और रावण के प्रति घृणा का प्रतीक है। वह उस पापी का मुख नहीं देखना चाहती, या अपनी पवित्रता को उसकी कुदृष्टि से बचाना चाहती है। यह क्रिया रावण के सभी प्रलोभनों का मौन लेकिन सशक्त अस्वीकार (rejection) है।
