Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अश्रु पूर्ण मुखीम् दीनाम् शोक भार अवपीडिताम् ।
वायु वेगैः इव आक्रांताम् मज्जन्तीम् नावम् अर्णवे ॥ ॥३-५५-४॥
aśru pūrṇa mukhīm dīnām śoka bhāra avapīḍitām । vāyu vegaiḥ iva ākrāntām majjantīm nāvam arṇave ॥ ॥3-55-4॥
Translation
Her face was filled with tears, she was miserable, weighed down by the burden of sorrow. She looked like a ship sinking in the ocean, attacked by the force of winds.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उनका मुख आंसुओं से भरा था, वे दीन थीं और शोक के भार से दबी हुई थीं। (वे ऐसी लग रही थीं) जैसे महासागर में तेज हवाओं के थपेड़ों से डूबती हुई कोई नाव हो।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses a powerful aquatic simile here. Sita represents a nāvam (ship/boat) and her grief is the arṇave (ocean). The vāyu vegaiḥ (force of the winds) represents the traumatic events and threats she is facing. She is described as majjantīm (sinking), implying that her spirit is being overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of her calamity. Her physical appearance—aśru pūrṇa mukhīm (face full of tears)—reflects this internal drowning. It illustrates that she is on the verge of emotional collapse, battered by circumstances beyond her control.
हिंदी टीका
वाल्मीकि सीता की मानसिक दशा का वर्णन करने के लिए एक अत्यंत मार्मिक उपमा (simile) का प्रयोग करते हैं। सीता 'शोक भार' (दुःख के बोझ) से दबी हुई हैं। उनकी तुलना 'मज्जन्तीम् नावम्' (डूबती हुई नाव) से की गई है। जैसे समुद्र में तूफान ('वायु वेगैः') नाव को डगमगा देता है और उसे डुबोने पर तुला होता है, वैसे ही सीता अपने दुर्भाग्य और वियोग के सागर में डूब रही हैं। यह उपमा उनकी अस्थिरता और संकट की गहराई को दिखाती है। लंका उनके लिए वह 'अर्णव' (सागर) है जहाँ कोई किनारा (सहारा) दिखाई नहीं दे रहा।
