दिव्य दुन्दुभि निर्घोषम् तप्त कांचन भूषणम् ।
सोपानम् कांचनम् चित्रम् आरुरोह तया सह ॥ ॥३-५५-९॥
divya dundubhi nirghoṣam tapta kāṃcana bhūṣaṇam । sopānam kāṃcanam citram āruroha tayā saha ॥ ॥3-55-9॥
Translation
Ravana ascended the wonderful golden staircase with her—a staircase resounding with the sound of divine drums and decorated with refined gold ornaments.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(उस भवन में) जहाँ दिव्य नगाड़ों की ध्वनि गूँज रही थी और जो तपाये हुए सोने के आभूषणों से सजा था, रावण ने सीता के साथ उस विचित्र स्वर्णमयी सीढ़ी (सोपान) पर आरोहण किया।
English Commentary
Ravana continues his tour of intimidation and seduction. The atmosphere is filled with divya dundubhi nirghoṣam (the sound of divine drums), creating an ambiance of constant celebration and majesty, usually reserved for gods. He leads Sita up a kāṃcanam sopānam (golden staircase). This ascent is symbolic of the elevation in status he is offering her—from a forest dweller to a queen. The sensory overload of gold and divine sounds is calculated to make the ascetic life she lived with Rama seem pale and destitute by comparison.

रावण सीता को अपने वैभव से प्रभावित करने का निरंतर प्रयास कर रहा है। यहाँ 'दिव्य दुन्दुभि निर्घोषम्' (दिव्य नगाड़ों की ध्वनि) का उल्लेख यह दर्शाता है कि रावण का महल किसी मंदिर या देव-सभा से कम नहीं है, जहाँ निरंतर मंगल ध्वनि होती रहती है। वह सीता को सोने की सीढ़ियों ('सोपानम् कांचनम्') पर ले जाता है। यह चढ़ाई प्रतीकात्मक है; रावण चाहता है कि सीता अपनी वनवासी जीवनशैली से ऊपर उठकर लंका के राजसी स्तर पर आएं। वह सीता को 'सह' (साथ) लेकर चलता है, जो उसकी अधिकार भावना और जबरदस्ती दोनों को दिखाता है, क्योंकि सीता वहां स्वेच्छा से नहीं जा रही हैं।
