Srimad Valmiki Ramayana

Sita envisions the battle as a purification process. She lists Ravana's negative attributes: "viryam" (false valor), "darpam" (arrogance), "balam" (brute force), and "utsekam" (haughtiness/madness). She declares that Rama will "apaneshyati" (remove/extract) these from his "gatrebhyah" (limbs/body). The method is a "shara varshena" (rain of arrows). The imagery suggests that Ravana is swollen with pride, and Rama's arrows will puncture this inflation, leaving him empty and defeated. It is a graphic description of how physical defeat leads to the shattering of the ego. Sita asserts that Rama's arrows attack not just the body, but the very source of Ravana's wickedness.
