प्रतਿ उवाच ततः सीताम् भय संदर्शनम् वचः ।
शृणु मैथिलि मत् वाक्यम् मासान् द्वादश भामिनि ॥ ॥३-५६-२४॥
Prati uvāca tataḥ sītām bhaya saṃdarśanam vacaḥ । Śṛṇu maithili mat vākyam māsān dvādaśa bhāmini ॥ ॥3-56-24॥

हिंदी अनुवाद
... (रावण ने) तब सीता को भय दिखने वाले वचन उत्तर में कहे। "हे मैथिली! मेरी बात सुन। हे भामिनी (क्रोध करने वाली स्त्री)! तुझे बारह महीने (का समय देता हूँ)।"
English Commentary
Stung by Sita's rejection, Ravana drops the facade of a suitor and adopts the persona of a terrifying tyrant. He speaks words intended to instill fear ('bhaya saṃdarśanam').

सीता के तिरस्कार से अपमानित होकर रावण अब अपने असली राक्षसी रूप में आ जाता है। वह 'भय संदर्शनम्' (भय दिखाने वाले) वचन बोलता है। यहाँ रावण ने सीता के लिए 'भामिनी' शब्द का प्रयोग किया है। साहित्य में 'भामिनी' का अर्थ एक सुंदर स्त्री भी होता है और एक क्रोधी स्वभाव वाली स्त्री भी।
