तत्र एनाम् तर्जनैः घोरैः पुनः सांत्वैः च मैथिलीम् ।
आनयध्वम् वशम् सर्वा वन्याम् गज वधूम् इव ॥ ॥३-५६-३१॥
Tatra enām tarjanaiḥ ghoraiḥ punaḥ sāṃtvaiḥ ca maithilīm । Ānayadhvam vaśam sarvā vanyām gaja vadhūm iva ॥ ॥3-56-31॥
Translation
"There, by terrible threats and then again by sweet persuasions, bring Maithili under control, just as a wild female elephant is tamed."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"वहां, तुम सब मिलकर भयानक तर्जनाओं (धमकियों) से और फिर मीठी बातों (सांत्वना) से, मैथिली को उसी प्रकार वश में करो, जैसे जंगल की हथनी को वश में किया जाता है।"
English Commentary
Ravana outlines the specific psychological torture methodology: the alternation between 'ghoraih tarjanaih' (terrible threats) and 'santvaih' (conciliation/sweet words). This is the classic carrot-and-stick approach intended to destabilize the victim's mind.

रावण यहाँ 'साम' (समझाना) और 'दण्ड' (डराना) की नीति अपनाने का आदेश देता है। वह कहता है कि कभी 'घोरैः तर्जनैः' (भयानक धमकियों) का प्रयोग करो और कभी 'सांत्वैः' (मीठी बातों/प्रलोभनों) का।
