शोकेन महता ग्रस्ता मैथिली जनकात्मजा ।
न शर्म लभते भीरुः पाश बद्धा मृगी यथा ॥३-५६-३५॥
Śokena mahatā grastā maithilī janakātmajā । Na śarma labhate bhīruḥ pāśa baddhā mṛgī yathā ॥ ॥3-56-35॥
Translation
Gripped by great grief, Maithili, the daughter of Janaka, timid by nature, found no peace, just like a doe bound by a snare.
हिंदी अनुवाद
महान शोक से ग्रस्त, वह भीरु (डरने वाली/संकोची) जनकनंदिनी सीता तनिक भी शांति नहीं पा रही थीं, जैसे जाल में बंधी हुई हिरनी छटपटाती है।
English Commentary
Sita is described as "bhiru" (timid/fearful), which in this context reflects her gentle, non-violent nature confronting absolute terror. The metaphor shifts from a doe among tigers to a "pasha baddha mrigi" (a doe caught in a snare). This emphasizes entrapment. Even if the tigers aren't attacking at this exact moment, the snare (captivity) holds her tight, denying her any "sharma" (rest or peace). It depicts the psychological suffocation of her imprisonment.

यहाँ सीता के लिए 'भीरु' शब्द का प्रयोग हुआ है। इसका अर्थ कायरता नहीं, बल्कि एक सात्विक स्त्री का अधर्म और क्रूरता के प्रति स्वाभाविक भय और संकोच है। उपमा 'पाश बद्धा मृगी' (फंदे में फंसी हिरनी) उनकी मानसिक और शारीरिक जकड़न को दिखाती है। अशोक वाटिका में होने के बावजूद, वह मानसिक रूप से स्वतंत्र नहीं हैं। उन्हें 'शर्म' (शांति/सुख) का एक क्षण भी प्राप्त नहीं हो रहा है।
