Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न विन्दते तत्र तु शर्म मैथिली विरूप नेत्राभिः अतीव तर्जिता ।
पतिम् स्मरन्ती दयितम् च देवरम् विचेतना अभूत् भय शोक पीडिता ॥३-५६-३६॥
Na vindate tatra tu śarma maithilī virūpa netrābhiḥ atīva tarjitā । Patim smarantī dayitam ca devaram vicetanā abhūt bhaya śoka pīḍitā ॥ ॥3-56-36॥
Translation
Maithili found no peace there, being excessively threatened by those ugly-eyed Rakshasis. Remembering her beloved husband and brother-in-law, tormented by fear and grief, she became senseless.
हिंदी अनुवाद
विरूप नेत्रों वाली राक्षसियों द्वारा अत्यंत डराए जाने पर मैथिली को वहां कोई सुख नहीं मिला। अपने प्रिय पति और देवर (लक्ष्मण) का स्मरण करती हुई, वह भय और शोक से पीड़ित होकर अचेत (सुध-बुध खो बैठी) हो गईं।
English Commentary
This verse concludes Sarga 56 describing Sita's total collapse. The relentless threats from the "virupa netrabhih" (ugly-eyed guards) combined with the painful memory of her protectors (Rama and Lakshmana) overwhelm her. The term "vicetana" suggests she either fainted or entered a state of shock/numbness. It signifies the limit of human endurance. She is left alone, terrorized, and unconscious, setting a dark stage for the narrative to shift back to Rama.

यह ५६वें सर्ग का अंतिम श्लोक है। यहाँ सीता की पीड़ा अपनी चरम सीमा (climax) पर है। राक्षसियों की 'तर्जना' (धमकियाँ) और अपने रक्षकों (राम-लक्ष्मण) की याद ('स्मरन्ती') के द्वंद्व ने उन्हें मानसिक रूप से तोड़ दिया है। 'विचेतना अभूत्' का अर्थ है कि वह मूर्छित हो गईं या सुन्न हो गईं। जब संकट बहुत बड़ा हो और सहायता दूर हो, तो मन रक्षात्मक रूप से बाहरी दुनिया से संपर्क तोड़ लेता है; यही स्थिति यहाँ सीता की है।
