Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
आजगाम जनस्थानम् राघवः परिशन्कितः ।
तम् दीन मानसम् दीनम् आसेदुः मृग पक्षिणः ॥३-५७-१२॥
Ājagāma janasthānam rāghavaḥ pariśaṅkitaḥ । Tam dīna mānasam dīnam āseduḥ mṛga pakṣiṇaḥ ॥ ॥3-57-12॥
Translation
Raghava, fully apprehensive, arrived at Janasthana. Then birds and animals, appearing miserable themselves, approached him who was miserable in mind.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राघव पूरी तरह आशंकित होकर जनस्थान (आश्रम क्षेत्र) में आ पहुँचे। तब पक्षी और पशु, जो स्वयं दीन (दुखी) लग रहे थे, उस दीन मन वाले (राम) के पास आए।
English Commentary
The pathetic fallacy is used here effectively. The birds and beasts mirror Rama's internal state ("dina manasam" - miserable mind). Their approach suggests a desire to communicate the tragedy that has occurred in his absence. The atmosphere of the entire forest is heavy with gloom, confirming that the "Janasthana" is no longer the sanctuary it was when he left it.

प्रकृति और नायक (Hero) के बीच का संबंध यहाँ स्पष्ट है। राम 'दीन मानसम्' (उदास मन वाले) हैं, और वन के जीव भी 'दीनम्' (उदास) हैं। पशु-पक्षियों का राम के पास आना यह संकेत देता है कि वे उन्हें कुछ बताना चाहते हैं, शायद सीता के अपहरण की सूचना देना चाहते हैं, लेकिन वे मूक हैं। यह दृश्य करुणा रस को उद्दीप्त करता है।
