इदम् हि रक्षो मृग संनिकाशम्प्रलोभ्य माम् दूरम् अनुप्रयातम् ।
हतम् कथंचित् महता श्रमेणस राक्षसो अभूत् म्रियमाण एव ॥३-५७-२२॥
idam hi rakṣo mṛgasaṃnikāśam pralobhya mām dūram anuprayātam |
hatam kathaṃcit mahatā śrameṇa sa rākṣaso abhūt mriyamāṇa eva ॥3-57-22॥
Translation
This demon, disguising himself as a deer, lured me and led me far away. Killed somehow with great effort, he became a Rakshasa (revealed his true form) only while dying.

मृग का वेश धारण करने वाले इस राक्षस ने मुझे लुभाकर बहुत दूर ला दिया। बमुश्किल और महान परिश्रम से जब वह मारा गया, तो मरते समय ही वह (असली रूप में) राक्षस बना।
English Commentary
Rama reflects on the deception, analyzing how the tactical diversion worked. He acknowledges that he was lured far away ('duram') by the disguise ('mriga-samnikasham'). The phrase 'mahata shramena' (with great effort) indicates that catching Maricha was not easy; the demon skillfully exhausted Rama and drew him away from the hermitage. The crucial realization is that the deer transformed into a Rakshasa only upon death, confirming the magical deception. This verse marks the moment of realization (anagnorisis) for Rama, where the magical illusion breaks, and the harsh reality of the plot against him becomes clear.
