अशुभम् बत मन्ये अहम् गोमायुः वाश्यते यथा ।
स्वस्ति स्यात् अपि वैदेह्या राक्षसैः भक्षणम् विना ॥३-५७-४॥
Aśubham bata manye aham gomāyuḥ vāśyate yathā । Svasti syāt api vaidehyā rākṣasaiḥ bhakṣaṇam vinā ॥ ॥3-57-4॥
Translation
"Alas, I consider it inauspicious, the way this jackal is howling. May Vaidehi be safe, without being eaten by the Rakshasas."

"मैं इसे अशुभ मानता हूँ, जैसे यह सियार बोल रहा है। राक्षसों द्वारा भक्षण (खाए जाने) से बचकर, क्या वैदेही (सीता) सुरक्षित होंगी?"
English Commentary
Rama voices his specific fear. The howl confirms his dread ("ashubham manye" - I consider it ill-luck). His primary concern is gruesome: he fears Sita might have been devoured ("bhakshanam") by the cannibals of the forest. This reflects the primal danger of the Dandaka forest. It is a moment of vulnerability for the hero, who prays for her safety ("svasti syat") despite the overwhelming bad omens.

राम के मन में सबसे भयानक विचार आता है—'राक्षसैः भक्षणम्' (राक्षसों द्वारा खा लिया जाना)। वनवास के दौरान ऋषियों ने उन्हें बताया था कि राक्षस मनुष्यों को खा जाते हैं। राम को डर है कि कहीं उन्होंने सीता को अकेला छोड़कर उन्हें राक्षसों का भोजन तो नहीं बना दिया। वह 'स्वस्ति' (कल्याण/कुशलता) की प्रार्थना करते हैं, लेकिन उनका मन घोर निराशा में है।
