स दृष्ट्वा लक्ष्मणम् दीनम् शून्यम् दशरथ आत्मजः ।
पर्यपृच्छत धर्माअत्मा वैदेहीम् आगतम् विना ॥३-५८-१॥
sa dṛṣṭvā lakṣmaṇam dīnam śūnyam daśarathātmajaḥ |
paryapṛcchata dharmātmā vaidehīm āgatam vinā ॥3-58-1॥
Translation
Seeing Lakshmana arrived distressed and empty (without Sita), the righteous son of Dasharatha asked about Vaidehi.

उन धर्मात्मा दशरथनन्दन (राम) ने दीन और उदास लक्ष्मण को (सीता से) रहित होकर आया हुआ देखकर, उनसे वैदेही (सीता) के विषय में पूछा।
English Commentary
This is the critical juncture where Rama meets Lakshmana returning from the hermitage. The adjective 'shunyam' (empty/void) describes Lakshmana profoundly—he is physically without Sita and emotionally drained. Rama is referred to as 'Dharmatma' (righteous soul), emphasizing that despite his adherence to dharma, tragedy has befallen him. Seeing Lakshmana alone confirms Rama's worst fears. The verse sets the stage for the confrontation where Rama, usually calm, will question Lakshmana for leaving his post, driven by the overwhelming realization of Sita's absence.

यह वह क्षण है जब श्रीराम और लक्ष्मण का वन में मिलन होता है। 'शून्यम्' शब्द का प्रयोग यहाँ दो अर्थों में है: लक्ष्मण का सीता के बिना (खाली हाथ) आना, और लक्ष्मण के चेहरे पर व्याप्त शून्यता (हताशा)। श्रीराम को 'धर्मात्मा' कहा गया है, जो विडंबनापूर्ण है क्योंकि वे धर्म के पालन में वन आए, लेकिन यहाँ राक्षस अधर्म द्वारा उनकी पत्नी को ले गए। लक्ष्मण को अकेले देखकर श्रीराम की आशंका सत्य में बदल जाती है। यह संवाद का आरंभ है जहाँ श्रीराम एक बड़े भाई और पति के रूप में लक्ष्मण से प्रश्न करते हैं।
