प्रस्थितम् दण्डक अरण्यम् या माम् अनुजगाम ह ।
क्व सा लक्ष्मण वैदेही याम् हित्वा त्वम् इह आगतः ॥३-५८-२॥
prasthitam daṇḍaka araṇyam yā mām anujagāma ha |
kva sā lakṣmaṇa vaidehī yām hitvā tvam iha āgataḥ ॥3-58-2॥
Translation
She who followed me when I set out for the Dandaka forest—where is that Vaidehi, O Lakshmana, whom you have left behind to come here?

जो मेरे दंडकारण्य प्रस्थान करते समय मेरे पीछे-पीछे चली आई थी, हे लक्ष्मण! वह वैदेही कहाँ है जिसे छोड़कर तुम यहाँ आ गए हो?
English Commentary
Rama invokes the memory of their departure from Ayodhya to highlight Sita's loyalty. By stating she 'followed' him ('anujagama'), he stresses that she chose the hardships of the forest purely out of love and duty, not obligation. This context makes her abandonment even more tragic. Rama’s question is laden with implicit rebuke: how could Lakshmana leave behind the woman who sacrificed royal comfort to be with them? It underscores the gravity of Lakshmana’s decision to leave her alone, framing Sita not just as a wife, but as a devoted companion deserving of absolute protection.

श्रीराम यहाँ सीता के पतिव्रत धर्म और त्याग का स्मरण कर रहे हैं। जब श्रीराम वन आ रहे थे, तो सीता को आने की बाध्यता नहीं थी, फिर भी उन्होंने स्वेच्छा से उनका अनुसरण किया ('अनुजगाम')। श्रीराम लक्ष्मण को यह याद दिलाकर ग्लानि अनुभव कराना चाहते हैं कि सीता, जिसने अपना सर्वस्व राम के लिए त्याग दिया, उसे अकेला छोड़ना कितना अनुचित था। 'हित्वा' (छोड़कर) शब्द में श्रीराम का उलाहना छिपा है। यह श्लोक सीता की निष्ठा और लक्ष्मण की भूल (भले ही विवशता में हो) के बीच के द्वंद्व को उजागर करता है।
