ब्रूहि लक्ष्मण वैदेही यदि जीवति वा न वा ।
त्वयि प्रमत्ते रक्षोभिः भक्षिता वा तपस्विनी ॥३-५८-११॥
brūhi lakṣmaṇa vaidehī yadi jīvati vā na vā |
tvayi pramatte rakṣobhiḥ bhakṣitā vā tapasvinī ॥3-58-11॥
Translation
Tell me, Lakshmana, is Vaidehi alive or not? Or was the ascetic lady eaten by Rakshasas while you were negligent?
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे लक्ष्मण! सच बताओ, वैदेही जीवित है या नहीं? अथवा जब तुम असावधान (प्रमत्त) हो गए थे, तब राक्षसों ने उस तपस्विनी को खा लिया?
English Commentary
Rama’s anxiety turns into an interrogation. He demands the truth from Lakshmana. The phrase 'tvayi pramatte' (while you were careless/negligent) carries a sting of accusation, implying that Lakshmana failed in his duty as a guardian. Rama voices his most primal fear: that Sita has been physically devoured ('bhakshita') by the demons. Contrastingly, calling Sita 'tapasvini' (ascetic lady) highlights her defenselessness and spiritual merit, making the image of her being eaten by monsters grotesquely tragic.

इस श्लोक में श्रीराम का भय क्रोध और उलाहने में बदल रहा है। वे लक्ष्मण से सीधा प्रश्न करते हैं। 'त्वयि प्रमत्ते' (तुम्हारे असावधान होने पर) वाक्यांश में लक्ष्मण के प्रति एक गंभीर आरोप छिपा है कि उन्होंने सीता की रक्षा में चूक की। 'भक्षिता' (खा ली गई) शब्द श्रीराम के मन में चल रहे सबसे वीभत्स भय को उजागर करता है—कि नरभक्षी राक्षसों ने सीता के कोमल शरीर को अपना आहार बना लिया होगा। सीता के लिए 'तपस्विनी' शब्द उनके निरीह और सात्विक स्वरूप को दर्शाता है, जो राक्षसों की क्रूरता के विपरीत है।
