सर्वथा तु कृतम् कष्टम् सीताम् उत्सृजता वने ।
प्रतिकर्तुम् नृशंसानाम् रक्षसाम् दत्तम् अन्तरम् ॥३-५८-१५॥
sarvathā tu kṛtam kaṣṭam sītām utsṛjatā vane |
pratikartum nṛśaṃsānām rakṣasām dattam antaram ॥3-58-15॥
Translation
By leaving Sita alone in the forest, a grievous error has indeed been committed. An opening was given to the cruel Rakshasas to retaliate.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वन में सीता को अकेली छोड़कर सर्वथा बड़ा अनर्थ (कष्ट) किया गया है। इससे उन क्रूर राक्षसों को बदला लेने (प्रतिकार करने) का अवसर मिल गया।
English Commentary
Rama analyzes the situation from a tactical perspective. Leaving Sita unprotected was a strategic blunder ('kashtham'). He uses the word 'antaram' (opening/opportunity/gap), realizing that their separation provided the exact vulnerability the enemy was waiting for. He acknowledges the Rakshasas' intent to 'pratikartum' (retaliate/counter-attack). This verse moves beyond emotion to the cold realization of cause and effect: the departure of Lakshmana broke their defensive formation, inviting the inevitable disaster.

श्रीराम यहाँ रणनीतिक भूल को स्वीकार करते हैं। 'कृतम् कष्टम्' (कष्टकर कार्य किया गया) यह दर्शाता है कि सीता को अकेला छोड़ना एक भारी भूल थी। 'दत्तम् अन्तरम्' अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण वाक्यांश है; इसका अर्थ है 'छिद्र' या 'अवसर' देना। श्रीराम जानते हैं कि राक्षस पहले से ही शत्रुता रखते थे, लेकिन उन्हें प्रहार करने का मौका नहीं मिल रहा था। सीता का अकेलापन वह 'अन्तर' (मौका) बन गया जिसका लाभ नृशंस (क्रूर) शत्रुओं ने उठाया। यह एक योद्धा का विश्लेषण है जो अपनी सुरक्षा पंक्ति में हुई चूक को देख रहा है।
