Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स्वम् आश्रमम् स प्रविगाह्य वीरोविहार देशान् अनुसृत्य कांश्चित् ।
एतत् तत् इति एव निवास भूमौप्रहृष्ट रोमा व्यथितो बभूव ॥३-५८-२०॥
svam āśramam sa pravigāhya vīro vihāradeśān anusṛtya kāṃścit |
etat tat iti eva nivāsabhūmau prahṛṣṭaromā vyathito babhūva ॥3-58-20॥
Translation
Entering his hermitage and seeking out certain places of recreation, saying "This is it, that is it" on the dwelling grounds, the Hero became thrilled (hair standing on end due to memory) and then pained.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस वीर (राम) ने अपने आश्रम में घुसकर उन क्रीड़ा-स्थानों (जहाँ वे सीता के साथ समय बिताते थे) को देखा। निवास भूमि में "यह वही स्थान है" (जहाँ सीता बैठती थी), ऐसा कहते हुए वे रोमांचित हो उठे और फिर अत्यंत व्यथित हो गए।
English Commentary
Rama wanders through the ashram, retracing memories attached to physical spots ('vihara deshan' - spots of leisure). By saying "etat tat" (this is the place, that is the place), he tries to summon her presence through association. The term 'prahrishta-roma' (hair standing on end/thrilled) suggests a visceral, involuntary physical reaction to these intense memories—a moment of connection—which is instantly crushed by the reality of her absence, leaving him 'vyathito' (pained). It captures the cruel oscillation between vivid memory and present emptiness.

श्रीराम आश्रम के उन स्थानों को ढूँढ रहे हैं जहाँ सीता रहती थीं ('विहार देशान्')। 'एतत् तत्' (यह वही स्थान है, वह वही जगह है) कहना उनकी स्मृति की तीव्रता को दिखाता है। 'प्रहृष्ट-रोमा' का अर्थ यहाँ 'रोमांचित होना' है, जो प्रिय की तीव्र स्मृति से उत्पन्न शारीरिक प्रतिक्रिया है (सात्विक भाव), लेकिन सीता को न पाकर वह रोमांच तुरंत 'व्यथा' (पीड़ा) में बदल जाता है। यह स्मृति और वास्तविकता का द्वंद्व है। वीर होकर भी राम यहाँ विरही प्रेमी की भांति अपनी स्मृतियों से जूझ रहे हैं।
