Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अथ आश्रमात् उपावृत्तम् अंतरा रघुनंदनः ।
परिपप्रच्छ सौमित्रिम् रामो दुःख अर्दितः पुनः ॥३-५९-१॥
atha āśramāt upāvṛttam antarā raghunandanaḥ |
paripapraccha saumitrim rāmo duḥkha arditaḥ punaḥ ॥3-59-1॥
Translation
Then, Raghunandana (Rama), tormented by grief, again asked Saumitri (Lakshmana), who had returned from the hermitage and met him on the way (midway).

तदनन्तर, रघुनंदन राम ने आश्रम से लौटकर बीच रास्ते में (अंतरा) मिले हुए सुमित्रानंदन (लक्ष्मण) से दुःख से पीड़ित होकर पुनः पूछा।
English Commentary
This verse sets the scene for the dialogue that occurs on the path ('antara') before they reach the empty hermitage. Although previous verses described the arrival, the narrative here focuses specifically on the interaction at the meeting point. Rama is described as 'duhkha arditah' (tormented by grief) and asks 'punah' (again), indicating his obsessive anxiety. He cannot reconcile why Lakshmana is there. It highlights the desperate need of the protagonist to understand the breach of protocol before facing the consequences at the destination.
