यदि जीवति वैदेही गमिष्याम्य् आश्रमम् पुनः ।
सुवृत्ता यदि वृत्ता सा प्राणान् त्यक्ष्यामि लक्ष्मण ॥३-५८-९॥
yadi jīvati vaidehī gamiṣyāmy āśramam punaḥ |
suvṛttā yadi vṛttā sā prāṇān tyakṣyāmi lakṣmaṇa ॥3-58-9॥
Translation
If Vaidehi is alive, only then will I return to the hermitage. O Lakshmana, if that virtuous lady has passed away, I too shall give up my life.

यदि वैदेही जीवित हैं, तो ही मैं पुनः आश्रम में जाऊँगा। हे लक्ष्मण! यदि वह सुचरित्रा (सीता) मर गई होंगी, तो मैं भी अपने प्राण त्याग दूंगा।
English Commentary
Rama sets a definitive condition for his return: the survival of Sita. By referring to her as 'suvritta' (of virtuous conduct), he emphasizes her moral purity, suggesting that her death would be a failure of dharma itself. The resolve to abandon his life ('pranan tyakshyami') if she is dead highlights the absolute interdependence of their lives. Rama views the hermitage not as a physical shelter but as a home defined by her presence; without her, it is merely a structure he cannot bear to enter. This marks the peak of his despair, where suicide is contemplated as the only recourse to a life without her.

श्रीराम यहाँ अपने जीवन और मरण का निर्णय सीता के अस्तित्व पर आधारित कर देते हैं। 'सुवृत्ता' (सदाचारिणी) विशेषण का प्रयोग करके वे सीता की पवित्रता को याद करते हैं, मानो वे कह रहे हों कि ऐसे पवित्र आचरण वाली स्त्री का विनाश अधर्म होगा। 'आश्रमम् पुनः गमिष्यामि' में एक शर्त छिपी है—यदि सीता नहीं हैं, तो उस गृह (आश्रम) का कोई अर्थ नहीं है। यह श्लोक श्रीराम की मानसिक स्थिति को दर्शाता है जहाँ वे सीता के बिना भविष्य की कल्पना करने में भी असमर्थ हैं। यह केवल पत्नी प्रेम नहीं, बल्कि अस्तित्व का संकट है।
